Wired - Oh, the glamour!

A little late with these stories that have been published already in Wired UK, often shoots for this magazine are in clean, almost sterile places, occasionally however, they are not...

A trip to Brighton saw me shooting Will Cummock and George Ancock make films with Super 8 cameras. We went down to the sea front, but in avoiding the cliches inherent with being by the sea, we shot in an underpass. During, the shoot, while I was lying on the floor to get a low angle shot, a gentleman asked if he could pass, so we obviously said of course. However he didn't want to pass, he simply wanted to urinate up the wall about 10 feet from where we were set up...

At that point I realised I didn't want to be lying on the floor any longer...

Another shoot saw me at a city farm in Hackney to shoot the musician Matthew Herbert. I would generaly avoid Hackney at the best of times, let alone when I am stood in a foot worth pig shit with the biggest examples of walking bacon I had ever seen...

Matthew had created an album made of sounds recorded during a pigs life from birth to the plate, so we had him amongst the pigs, pretending to record them. The old phrase to not work with kids or animals rang true, as the giants ran around, knocking over lighting and brushing everyone out of their way...

Podium Magazine - Graeme Swann and Jaguar

In the latest Podium magazine is a feature I shot with cricketer Graeme Swann at the Jaguar test track in Gaydon. This was a new one for me, I had photographed plenty of sports personalities, but I had never photographed cars before...

The afternoon was spent either following or being followed by Graeme as he drove the new Jaguar XK8.

Hanging out of and being thrown around the back of an open door Range Rover is a new experience on me...

Something for Xmas, Mark Gatiss as Jacob Marley from Charles Dickens A Christmas carol...

I shot mark a few years back for a christmas issue in an old pub in Hampstead. I had shot Mark before with Julia Davis, for a feature promoting Fear of Fanny, the Fanny Craddock drama which broadcast on BBC4, so I knew that he would be both great, and an easy person to shoot. If I remember correctly the Marley idea was his, he is a keen horror fan, having written a series of creepy tales (in which he also appeared, for the BBC), so performed perfectly in the role...

I had grown up with The League of Gentleman, and it's always good to shoot people who have made work you admire, and he continues to do this with the BBC's Sherlock Holmes, I would like to see another League though...

British GQ - Jamie MacDonald & Diageo

I had a great job for GQ promotions, shooting the barman of the year, Jamie MacDonald in a promo in conjunction with Diageo drinks...

The idea was to get a double page spread for the magazine (with text space to the left) and a shot for the iPad, which would link into a video which shows him making his prize winning drink....

The iPad lead shot was shot a a still and we also managed to get Jamie to stand as still as possible while a conical flask bubbled with dry ice...

The video I shot and edited is on the iPad version of the magazine. We discussed what was required of the video, the magazine wanted a nicely shot 'GQ' style short film, and the idea was to have it so it tonally fit in with the photography...

Video is something that I am being asked increasingly more if I can do, and Conde Nast seem to be really pushing the idea magazines as Apps with moving content ( I recently also shot a video for Wired UK).

Wired - Jo Hamilton

Castle Gibson is a great location house in North London, it's all high ceilings and battered walls and was the setting for a stills and video shoot for Wired with the musician Jo Hamilton...

Jo plays the Air Piano, there aren't many in existence, so at the moment it's pretty much a specialised skill. It is a midi controller, connects to a your computer and works by breaking beams above the device at different levels, playing or triggering different sounds....

We shot a short video, which can be seen on the Wired app, with Jo explaining the device, and giving a performance of her track 'Alive, Alive' ...

This video will appear on a new section on my website, which will also feature videos shot for GQ and the Sunday Times Magazine...

Wired - Cristofer Toumazou

As i've mentioned before shoots for Wired can be tricky. They can be even trickier if you have to go back to a location to photograph a different subject. I had already been to Imperial College in London to shoot Prof. Molly Stevens (that can be seen here...)

The subject was Cristofer Toumazou, he heads up a unit that deals with medical chips (similar to those in a mobile phone) that can do all kinds of things that are better explained by clicking here...

I did get to dress up in one of these overalls and go into the dust free 'yellow room'... I have no idea what happens in here, or why it's yellow...

Attitude - Sharon Gless

A rainy day in London led me to a hotel in Mayfair to shoot the actress Sharon Gless for Attitude.

A room which was less then grand as the name suggested was set aside for the interview and shoot, but we ended up in the hotel room scenario. The room, even for one in Mayfair, was still just another hotel room, so we ended up opting for the only white wall large enough in the room...

I have always said that when I shoot for Attitude, I should get the shot and run, they are thorough in interviews, but sometimes leave me with no time (shakes fist sarcastically!) . But the interview happened first and I was in a different building, so couldn't nudge things along faster... hence my time was reduced from 20 - 30 minutes to around 4 -5...

It's good to get a rapport, even if slight with the subject, but Sharon was open and friendly and eased straight in, even apologising for the brief amount of time... a class act...

Attitude - Craig Garner

Craig Garner is an actor who has appeared in Harry Potter, and is currently filming Snow White and the Huntsman, he also featured in the Channel 4 documentary programme Seven Dwarves...

I had never seen the programme, but it centred around seven actors who were in panto in Woking who all were of small height. I feel I have to be careful as I don't know what the correct term would be, so I am avoiding using specific terms so as not to offend. I suppose there shouldn't need to be a phrase, people don't need to necessarily be defined by physical characteristics.

Craig was wary of being seen as 'cute', he is an adult and wanted to be presented as such, and I naturally shot him as I would any subject. Height, weight, age etc. aren't issues that should effect a shoot, each one is about getting the best for the client.

I feared the show would be exploitative, but when I got round to viewing it I found that it was however not as sensationalistic as i had presumed it would be. The only people in the episode I saw that looked bad were some of the 'townies' of Woking who exhibited an offensive ignorance...

Podium Magazine - Paul Deighton

Podium Magazine, is a new prestige magazine that is marketed at an upmarket audience.

I was sent to shoot Paul Deighton, an Olympic Games executive at the Olympic headquarters in Canary Wharf...

The shoot took place in an office which overlooked the Games site, and the new stadium could be clearly seen. Paul eased fairly easily into the shoot, a rarity when it comes to business types, although the phrase "I think you must have enough now..." always makes my heart sink...

Wired - Efe Cakarel and Mubi

The site shows some great iconic films, and acts as a hub for conversation and critique...

Also shot was a short introductory film which can be seen on the Wired UK magazine ipad app.

FourFourTwo - Paolo Di Canio

FourFourTwo have spent the past few seasons as sponsors for Swindon Town, and I have made the trip to Wiltshire numerous times over the past couple of years to document the changes at the club. One of the more interesting developments is the signing of Paolo Di Canio as the new manager, who has filled in the role vacated by ex Luton Town player Danny Wilson ( I never met brief manager Paul Hart ).

The results from the day can be see in the current issue of FourFourTwo, most of it was about behind the scene fitness tests and pre season training, I was asked however to get 20 minutes with Paolo to get some portraits. Once I was asked how much time I needed to photograph Ian Wright, and then half it.

This case was more extreme, my twenty minutes was reduced to 20 seconds.

I had prepared knowing this would possibly the case, both with earlier shots of his assistant, Fabrizio Piccaret, new goalkeeper, Mattia Lanzano, and the journalist (and drummer with Howl Griff) who was with me, Nick Moore...

The thing is, I know we would have had more time if it wasn't for a certain sports channel and a national tv network. We had organised our time, got ourselves into place, and sorted ourselves out. But every time I am ready to shoot, I am left standing because of these two, even though they have had time previously during the afternoon. I have lost count of the times I have been left standing in the cold while the person I am there to shoot walks past me to get to the mic...

But still, I got the shot, and you know why, because I'm a professional...

... and by the way Paolo and his team were as amenable as they could be in helping me get what I needed, the guy has that Italian passion about his game (and gives great interview), so I wish him luck as he tries to get the club promoted...

Buzz Magazine - Made In Chelsea

Buzz magazine (with the weekend Sun newspaper) sent me on a job which was a slight departure from the usual portraiture work. I followed the journalist Victoria Garo-Falides as she was given a 'Chelsea' makeover courtesy of two of the stars of E4 reality show, Made In Chelsea. I had been on similar reportage shoots, Four Four Two Magazine had sent me up and down the country following the pursuits of Swindon Town Football Club, but the behind stage machinations of a football club are distinctly different from what I was sent to cover in West London.

The article followed the 'transformation' and took in nails, tanning, a hair salon, lunch, clothes shopping and cocktails (so maybe not too different from pro footballers after all!..). Although I had shot for Buzz before (here) I had no idea what to expect on this shoot. I had never watched the show, although it appears to be pretty successful, and after seeing a few minutes of Jersey Shore while abroad, had stereotypical notions of what the girls may be like. These were actually despelled as the day progressed, and the ladies proved themselves to be lacking any kind of 'class' pretensions and were just nice to spend a day shooting with. I would be curious to see how they are portrayed in the show, to see if they have been edited into specific characters...

Oh, and for me the funniest part of the day was getting 'papped'. Sam, Picture Director at Buzz forwarded a shot to me, so now I languish on the data base of a paparazzi news site. Fame at last? I'm not so sure...

Wired - Wonga

The new issue of Wired is about to come out, but in the outgoing issue I have an 8 page feature with the founders of money lenders, Wonga...

This was shot in conjunction with Ben, designer at Wired, in the offices by Regent's Park. As with all shoot's in an office it can be pretty tricky to get anything interesting, but Jonty (longer hair) is also something of an artist, and the place was littered with paintings, sculptures and objects...

It was a fairly tricky one, in one of her stores, just off of Sloane Square, with customers milling around, and having to work around them. Liz herself was a lady who has spent enough time on tv and in pictures to realise how she prefers to be shot, so a fairly relaxed shoot (aside from punters) was had by all...

Wired - Tracey Moberly

The latest edition of Wired UK has an article with the artist Tracy Moberly. She has kept every text message she has been sent and this feature centred around the project she has where she attaches her number with a message onto helium filled balloons, releases them and waits to see what messages she gets returned. She uses these texts as the basis for artworks including poems and performance pieces.

She also has a book coming out titled 'Text Me Up' which charts the progress of her life through all of these texts.

Goldie - Revisited

With Drum and Bass icon, Goldie all over the BBC at the moment, I thought it might be an idea to revisit some shots I took a couple of years back for a now defunct music magazine.

It's interesting to look at older photographs and the way you processed them at the time, and how techniques you now use may have changed. Also when you go back to the original set, your point of view changes on certain images that may have originally got brushed aside, you see things with fresh eyes and new experience...

Buzz Magazine - Jack O'Connell

I shot ex Skins actor Jack O'Connell recently for Buzz magazine, the TV listings mag that comes with The Sun on a Saturday. The theme of the page is to use a previous piece of artwork as the reference point for the picture, for example an album cover. For Jack, The Doors best of compilation was chosen, so a fairly easy set up was required...

The shoot was also made easy by Jack himself, he bounded into the studio and we immediately knew this would be quick and he would get it. So confident were we of this, the PR lady from Sky moved all of her meetings forward an hour, an we did indeed finish ahead of schedule. You always know when a shoot will flow well, and although the photo is serious in tone, he proved himself to be completely affable, dancing in between shots to James Brown which was playing from his held iPhone, just out of shot...

One of the good things in life is great food, I came late in life to the wonders of Sushi, and have never actually had the really decent stuff, that is until I went to photograph Nobu at his restaurant on Park Lane...

I would generally avoid placing the subject with the tools of their trade, but Nobu (or Nobuyuki Matshisa to give him his full name) had the prerequisite charm to not make it appear too obvious. There was also an alterior motive, I may get to eat the platter which we used... and I did, offered up by the great man himself...

The Xbox 360 has a new guitar controller, which apparently acts more like the real thing, and to test this I was sent to Manchester to shoot Jonathan, the singer with Everything Everything, giving it a dry run...

Before we commenced the Wired shoot, the band's management had me shoot the rehearsal session at the Royal Northern College of Music. The band were performing their album Man Alive at two shows with an orchestra of students from the college, one show was at the college itself, and one was in London at the Union Chapel...

GQ - Tom Hadfield

I was called up by the GQ promotions team to shoot the entrepreneur Tom Hadfield for an advertorial for Drambuie whisky in the current issue.

At the age of 17 Tom created soccernet... which he then sold for 40 million dollars. He is now involved in a 'food' inhaler, which gives you a hit of flavour with a puff of the device (Tom can be seen holding the device in the photographs). For example you could get a hit of Red Bull or chocolate, without any kind of calories, i'll be honest, I have no idea if this works...

Wired - Imogen Heap

Playing catch up here...

I shot Imogen heap at her home/studio in Essex for Wired. She had a houseful of unusual instruments, both new and old, including the keyboard/ bassoon type thing which can be seen in the foreground, apparently she had been given it by the manufacturers...

She brought many ideas to the shoot and an hour shoot was extended over another hour so we could get all of the options, things would continually get brought in instruments, gadgets etc. The piece illustrated her music and social networking, the screens had images from fans that had been uploaded to various sites that were to be included in a project...

Sport Magazine - Frank Warren

For my second cover for Sport Magazine I travelled to Hertford to shoot the boxing promoter Frank Warren, although 'shoot' maybe the wrong word to use considering he took a bullet in 1989...

The offices were adorned with posters from some classic fights,from the likes of Tyson, Prince Naseem, Frank Bruno, Riddick Bowe, and a huge painting of Evander Holyfield graced the wall of Frank's office. He is also a big music man, with 60's posters for gig's by the likes of The Who and The Kinks were framed, and lack and white prints of The Stones. He told me of the time he saw the Pistols - "...there was phlegm everywhere..."

It's always a surprise to walk into the supermarket on a Sunday and find one of your syndicated (through Camerapress) photographs staring at you from one of the papers. This happened a while back while shooting Usain Bolt for Sport Magazine at the offices of Harper collins publishers, and a copy of The Times with one of my shots of Tony Blair, lay there on one of the tables in the foyer.

Wired - Prof. Molly Stevens

The shoot's for Wired Magazine can be fairly tricky - the need to illustrate what the subject does, or is involved with, and sometimes less then ideal locations. This was taken at Empire College London, in a lab which was full of all the objects that we thought would make a great shot, but actually confused the image and took away from the subject. Prof Molly Stevens is working on technology to help the process of growing bones, the one in the shot apparently belonged to an elderly chinese woman who had long since passed...

The pink background in the shot was simply a decorative panel, and we worried that it looked too much like a studio shot instead of a lab. However the lab, with all of it's paraphenalia, simply took away from the core idea of what she does... sometimes less is more...

In the latest edition of Wired UK ( you should still be able to get it...), is an article on Tony Coniglario, of 69 Colebrook Row, a cocktail bar in Islington, London. Tony is a little like a Heston Blumenthal character, concocting drinks with unusual ingredients such as horseradish, which he scientifically creates in a 'lab' above the bar...

I have never quite understood cricket, but it is also a sport that many people say I need to actually go to, to appreciate. I had a trip to Lord's cricket ground in London, to shoot the head pastry chef, Thierry Besselievre. Why they need a specialist chef for scones etc at a cricket ground, I am not entirely sure, however I do know that the man makes a damn fine cake, and I still have no idea of the rules of Cricket...

The shots should be in the Eurostar magazine, Metropolitan sometime soon, so if your on your way to Paris you might see them...

New Website Sections

Two new sections have been added to my website (www.leon-c.com), Swindon Town FC, and Forty Three. I have spent a large amount of time with the club, documenting them for Four Four Two Magazine, and gathered a wealth of material, spending time behind the scenes, on coaches, at rival clubs, and this work is often more of a mix between portraiture and reportage. There was much excitement recently as Swindon proceeded to the play off final for promotion, but they unfortunately lost out to Millwall...

Forty Three is a personal project set around the house that I am currently in the process of renovating, and focuses on the empty spaces and the people involved in improving and working on those spaces...

FourFourTwo and Samsung Football

Many of my job's for FourFourTwo Magazine are with Swindon Town, the magazine is a club sponsor, and over the past two years I have seen them stave off relegation to Division 2, and this season seen them push for promotion. They now have a promotion with Samsung to find a new player, and shots taken during my time with Swindon are utilised, these can be seen at http://www.samsungfootball.co.uk/procontract/.Part of the interesting deal between club and magazine is the extent to which you see behind the scenes, in dressing rooms, training sessions, with physio's and on the coach. We have gone into the homes of players, and talked to families, not in the 'Hello' magazine kind of way, but from the point of view of exploring the complete experience of what it is like to be a player, access you would never get with the highly protected world of Premiership football...

Also, the manager is Danny Wilson, the man scored a vital goal for the mighty Hatters (Luton Town) in the 1988 Littlewoods Cup Final, and although I have a shot of myself with Paul Walsh when I photographed the Masters tournament, in Dubai, I have no idea why don't have one with Danny, (although I can say I have had several drinks bought by him)...
Swindon Town play the second leg of the Division 1 play offs tonight, I wish them luck...

FHM - Snow and Lady Wrestlers

Not much has happened on this blog recently, having sold a flat in London to move out to the 'burbs. Funnily enough only an extra 15 minutes on the tube, but thankfully away from the Northern Line...

The property in question could be called a house, but is in fact a wreck, photos will no doubt turn up of fat stained ceilings and various self inflicted injuries with heat guns and hammers during the renovation of the 'beast'...

A little late, as these have already been and gone are these two features for FHM. Very different stories in contrasting locations. During the snow, which seemed to last forever, but now seems ages ago, I went to a large field to shoot Ross Matthews, a Crime Response Expert for the Foreign Office. Now London had pretty much shed it's layer of the cold stuff, but here it was like another country, a foot of snow and the request to get some shot's without any...

To contrast I had to trek to another inhospitable environment, Coventry, to document a couple of Journo's being catapulted around a ring by some American female wrestlers from TNA Wrestling. Can you do that again, is not the kind of question someone wants while genuinely being hurled into what are actually not ropes, but elevator cables (even if it is by young ladies with the names Madison Rain and Velvet Sky)...

Nick Clegg MP

As a continuation of the 'Leader' series for Attitude, her are the results from time spent at Westminster with Nick Clegg. While I had all of 60 - 90 seconds with the Prime Minister, I had a little more with Nick - probably 90- 120 seconds. It always fills me with dread when the first words out of a subjects mouth are "Hello, we have to quick". It reminds me of the time when Ian Wrights 'people' asked me how long I needed and then told me to half it...

During my time wandering around looking for a location I was reported to the police by an MP who obviously hadn't seen the 'I'm a photographer not a terrorist' rally in Trafalgar Square, but luckily one of the Liberal's came to my defence and managed to prevent a grilling... Apparently I wasn't meant to be going through the door that I was attempting to open, well here's a piece of simple advice, if you don't want people to going through, put up a sign...

Lord Chris Smith, Chairman of the Environment Agency, for a 'Green' feature, nice guy, another fairly quick shoot, but more relaxed...

BT Upload Innovate

A new innovation in the way that information is consumed can be seen by the online ezine from BT, Upload Innovate, it has interactive information and video content presented in the form of a traditional magazine. Magazines are obviously attempting to gather readership via the internet and other methods of presenting on screens as opposed to the printed page, especially with the impending release of the iPad, so this method may be one that becomes increasingly popular in the next few years.

Logistically these things are always interesting things to handle, in print you will have specific areas where text etc may go, but with this, information bars, video content and other moving aspects need to be taken into consideration.

Nero/ Chase and Status/ DJ Sam Wire

At the tail end of last year I took the press shots of Nero, which are now being filtered out into the press.

This was for MTA records, the new label owned by Chase and Status. I did the press for their last album More Than Alot, after shooting them for a magazine cover, and they then asked me to shoot there new label signing. Since I shot them last year (not necessarily because…) they have been pretty successful, producing tracks for the likes of Rihanna, had a top ten track from the Harry Brown film (with Michael Caine), and signed a new deal with a major label.

I had no idea however until the day before, that the new signing was Nero, a couple of guys that I had actually known for several years. And of course this should have made the shoot go smoothly. However on turning up at the studio, there was a bailiffs notice on the door and we were left stood in the street in central London on a cold afternoon desperately phoning around for a new location (thankfully my agent was on site to rectify this situation, and was able to find somewhere rapidly…).

Will and Saul from C&S were in the studio for the shoot, Will especially was very involved and acted as an art director, and while Dan, Joe and vocalist Alana were changing between setups, label manager and DJ in his own right, Sam Wire, stepped in for some portraits.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown

Hello.

This is the first entry in my blog, I’ll be honest, I am not sure what I am doing with some of the technical aspects, such as RSS feeds, but I am sure they will be rectified in time… let’s go straight in…

The Prime Minister.

A man who is (some would say controversially), in charge of our fair isle, and a man who doesn’t have much time to stand around for photo’s. These were shot for Attitude Magazine, they are running several issues on the lead up to the Election (Mr Clegg and hopefully Mr Cameron to follow…), and the pieces are being written by the award winning journalist, Johann Hari. People ask me what the PM is like, to be honest I still don’t really know, 9 shots were taken and I wanted to get 2 different set ups, one that was more direct, and one that was more atmospheric, so I had to work faster then usual. Panic can set in when you leave a location like NO. 10 Downing Street, and your shot tally hasn't even gone into double digits, but somehow after photographing the ex PM, Mr Blair (see below), I knew that he would just choose his own time to leave, and it’s generally sooner then you would hope… a busy man with busy plans.
